SPECIAL EVENT:  The October 14 club meeting was moved to the Cargill plant warehouse on Needmore Road so that members could participate in Cargill's annual Chili Cookoff. The event is a fund raiser for United Way. This was a chance for our members to support Cargill as a way of thanking them for all of the support that they have given to our club. For a donation of $5 per person we were able to partake in a meal of hot dogs, a multitude of chili and soup recipes, plus dozens of different deserts. The chili and deserts were submitted by volunteers for judging in several categories. It was great fun and attended by what seemed like a few hundred people, and it was nice to meet and interact with some of the Cargill employees. Cargill is a major contributor to United Way, and this was an impressive effort by the company and employees. The Chili Cookoff is held every October, so we will plan to make this an annual club meeting and try to get an even bigger contingent of Northridge Optimists there next year.

Upcoming Speakers: We have speakers scheduled for the next four club meetings, so you won't want to miss these meetings. Next week, Oct. 21, we will have a special program presented by a young man by the name of David Sherman who participated in our speech contest when he was a student at Northridge 12-15 years ago.  He is now a film maker and has put together two wonderful short promotional films extolling the arts scene in Dayton. Along with him will be Michael and Sandy Bashaw.  The Bashaws are the lead musicians (you may have heard them perform around town with their group “Puzzle of Light”). See the schedule in the post below for the other programs later in the month and in November.
