Meeting of May 14, 2019:
Lynn Wood and Katie Kerry were the speakers at the May 14 meeting, representing Clothes That Work. Lynn is the Director of Development, and Katie is the Director of Education & Outreach.
Lynn described Clothes That Work as being an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that has been providing professional clothing, image counseling and training for job seekers in Montgomery County since 1998. They provide interview appropriate clothing and training on how to dress for work, for both men and women. They also conduct seminars, give interviewing tips, and coach on exhibiting appropriate professional behavior. Donations of clothing are needed to provide the needed outfits, and of course monetary donations are a main source of support. There are also numerous volunteer opportunities such as being a client coach, handling inventory, and working in the Boutique. Support also comes from two fundraisers, “Men at Work” in the spring, and “Fashioning Futures Luncheon” in the fall. |

The “Clothes That Work Boutique” is a resale shop open to the public featuring high quality clothing. When donated clothing is not appropriate for interview or work situations, this clothing is sold in the Boutique. All of the proceeds from the Boutique go right back to the primary mission of the organization.
Katie, as the Director of Education & Outreach, told about a series of workshops designed to equip both job seekers and the newly employed with the knowledge and skills they need to create a professional image that will help them gain and maintain employment. These classes emphasize the fact that one’s professional image is composed of more than just clothes; image comprises communication skills, behaviors in the workplace, digital footprint, and financial health. She is now going to various area high schools to conduct the workshop, and covers things like conflict resolution, how to introduce oneself, resume building, and work ethic.
For volunteer opportunities, information on clothing donations, fundraising events, monetary donations, and the Boutique, see the Clothes That Work website at: http://www.clothesthatwork.org

Each holiday season (since 1984) Optimist members have provided some local families with groceries for a good holiday meal. The Northridge School System provides us with names of families who are particularly needy due to economic circumstances. Club members and other volunteers meet on a particular Saturday in December to buy groceries and deliver them to the families. Beginning with 2014, the program has been named in honor of Optimist member Denny Mantel who had chaired the event for over 30 years. Each year he spent countless hours organizing and leading the program, and inspiring members with his dedication. Denny passed away in February of 2014, and club members have established a separate fund in his memory to make sure that we can continue the program. The fund was established with direct donations as well as from portions of club fund raising events.
