Announcement on 2020 Northridge Optimist Club Golf Scramble:
What would have been the 37th Annual Northridge Optimist Club Golf Scramble fundraiser, usually held in September, has been CANCELLED for 2020 due to the pandemic situation.
• The COVID-19 status in our area, and the uncertain outlook through the September 2020 time frame have made it imperative to make this difficult decision to insure the safety and health of everyone involved. Based on responses to a member-wide survey, the consensus was to skip the event for this year and concentrate on other options for raising money for the Northridge Polar Bear Foundation Fund, which provide grant money through The Dayton Foundation to support educational enhancements that are not covered by school district budgets.
|
• The need to support the education of Northridge students is still there for the 2020-2021 school year, so we hope you can still help in providing donations to this cause. To learn more about the Northridge Polar Bear Foundation Fund, and see how you can help, go to the fund page by clicking on the button at the right. Since the golf event is held for the benefit of the Polar Bear Foundation Fund, there will be no funds to add the the foundation for the coming school year without additional support from the community.

• The members of the Northridge Optimist Club thank all of the golfers, sponsors, and donors who have supported our event last year, and in previous years. We hope that next year provides a better opportunity for an event where we can all get together.
36th Annual Northridge Optimist Club Scramble Report
On September 26, 2019 the Northridge Optimist Club held its 36th Annual Golf Scramble. The proceeds of this event are used to fund activities such as the Optimist International sponsored Optimist Essay Contest for students, our Christmas Sharing program which distributes food to some Northridge families during the Christmas holidays, and the Northridge Polar Bear Foundation Fund, a component fund of The Dayton Foundation, which supports Northridge School educational activities by awarding educational grants.
For the third year in a row the club held the event at Miami Valley Golf Club, a PGA Championship Course. Golfers enjoyed a beautiful autumn day, with a tee off time of 1:00 PM, and an excellent prime rib buffet dinner afterward in the MVGC dining room. Awards and many prizes were presented at the dinner. Golfers enjoyed the great course and fine facilities at Miami Valley course. Many thanks to all of the MVGC staff for their support in presenting this very successful outing. Besides the participation of the golfers, the support of donors and sponsors greatly enhanced the success of this effort which will help Northridge area students. The club wishes to thank the sponsors and donors for their support. A list of the major sponsors and donors can be seen in the Event Program, which can be downloaded by clicking the button below. (The sponsor pages of this program are also shown below). There were also several volunteers who supported the event by providing valuable help to club members with activities of registration, raffle ticket sales, and set up. Thanks to all. Thanks to all! Thanks to the golfers, sponsors, donors, members, helpers, and volunteers for contributing to the success of the Northridge Optimist Club 36th Annual Scramble golf outing on Thursday, September 26, 2019.

Community Support
The Northridge Polar Bear Foundation Fund
![]() The Northridge Polar Bear Foundation Fund was started by Northridge Local Schools with The Dayton Foundation for funding school related programs that were not covered by school district budgets. The fund was started with an initial investment of $23,000, $16,000 of which was donated by Northridge Optimist Club. The stipulation for the use of funds was to preclude its use for scholarships.
The disbursement of funds is handled as a grant process, with an advisory committee that evaluates applications for funds. The Northridge Optimist Club has three members on the advisory committee, which also includes the Superintendent of Northridge Schools, and a representative from The Dayton Foundation. The application form is made available through the school. Several grants have been made over the past few years for various educational programs initiated by teachers for enhancing and developing students' reading, writing, vocabulary, creative, and organizing skills. In July of 2016 the club donated an additional $5,000 to the Polar Bear Fund. The Northridge Optimist Club is proud of its contributions to and participation with this fund and recognizes the value of enhancing the educational experience for Northridge students. With the Northridge Optimist Scholarships (see below) now being covered by a well established endowment fund, the club is now directing its funding efforts into this Northridge Polar Bear Foundation Fund to further enhance the educational experience for Northridge students of all grade levels. The Scholarships
![]() The Northridge Optimist Scholarships are awarded from the Optimist Club of Dayton-Northridge Scholarship Fund, administered by The Dayton Foundation. This fund has awarded over 300 scholarships to Northridge students over the past thirty five years, totaling well over $200,000. The Dayton Foundation administers the dispersal of the funds to the scholarship recipients, who are selected by the club's scholarship committee, in conjunction with school counselors. The money in this fund was started with the proceeds of this golf event beginning in 1984, and now is at a level to disburse scholarships without the need of further investments. Thus the club is now using this Northridge Optimist Club Scramble event to add funding the the Northridge Polar Bear Foundation Fund as described above.
In addition to the foundation scholarships, additional Northridge Optimist scholarships are awarded by Cargill Inc., via the Sharron Braun/Cargill Northridge Optimist Scholarships. This fund is named after the late Sharron Braun, a past Northridge Optimist President, and Cargill employee who started this Cargill fund with the Optimist Club. |
