Meeting of July 8: Lori Ward, Superintendent of Dayton City Schools was the speaker. She covered a variety of topics on the challenges and needs of today's students. She stressed an emphasis on approaching education as a "cradle to career" process, attempting to reach children at an early age to prepare them for Kindergarten and to develop their reading skills for the third grade reading requirements. There are currently shortages of skilled employees, and various programs are now helping to direct students to an education that would provide these skills. One such program is College Promise, which provides mentoring for students, beginning in elementary school, and follows the student through school to prepare them for secondary education. Our club has committed monetary donations to the program, but the biggest need is for people to volunteer as mentors. Many thanks to Ms. Ward for her very informative presentation. We will have her back at another time for updates and more discussion on College Promise.
