Meeting Place Move: At the March 31 meeting the club met for the first time at Brixx Ice Company at 500 E. First Street in downtown Dayton (across the street from Fifth/Third Field). The meeting had a a great turnout of members, and a good program. The private room upstairs was very nice and offered plenty of room, with members sitting around a large central table. Brixx has a diverse menu, and the food is excellent, so everyone should be able to find things they like. The service was excellent (courtesy of Nick, our server) and the timing worked out well, with orders taken at the outset, and then time for the speaker to make his presentation prior to the serving of the meals. Then there was time for club business, and we finished up right at 1:00. The response from members who attended was very positive, so it looks like this will work out well, and the next couple of month's meetings are scheduled accordingly. Thanks to Brixx for the nice welcome. |
•The speaker at the March 31 meeting was Jon Faulkner of the Elliot & Faulkner law firm. Jon specializes in estate planning, and he spoke to the members about proper planning. He touched on subjects such as wills, life insurance, trusts, and probate court. An interesting point was that over 50% of the people who perished in the 911 tragedy did not have a will or life insurance. A will serves as a blueprint to guide the probate court in finalizing an estate. Jon emphasized that the lack of a will causes undue complications in the settling of estates. He mentioned another area of preparation that needs to be addressed, and that is for business owners to establish procedures (including insurance) to cover the transition of the business after the owners death. Many thanks to Jon for sharing these insights. • Next week, on April 7, another good program is planned. It will be presented by Rick Elworth , a retired policeman. He will talk about the effect that the 911 events had on the Dayton Police Department, and local law enforcement. That promises to be an interesting view, and we hope to have another good turnout for the meeting. |
Outstanding Club Member Awards: Coming up in May is the Presidents Club Outstanding Club Member Breakfast. Each year the Dayton Presidents Club hosts a breakfast meeting to honor outstanding members of all service clubs in the Dayton area. President Alan has announced two recipients as our club's outstanding members for this year's event. They are Mike Gorman and Chris Young. Both have contributed greatly to our club in the past year and exemplify the spirit of volunteerism that the Presidents Club seeks to recognize. Mike was the prime mover in getting the Polar Bear Fund on track with the granting of funds that it was designed to perform. Our club was the primary donor of money to Northridge Schools to establish the fund, and Mike has worked closely with the school system and The Dayton Foundation to get this done. Chris took over the responsibility of organizing the hole sponsorship signs for the golf outing last year, and he has contributed donations to the club through his volunteer efforts. He also was instrumental in helping to organize and conduct the Christmas Sharing project. The club thanks Mike and Chris for their contributions to the club, and congratulates them on the Presidents Club award as our outstanding members for 2014-2015. The event will be on Thursday, May 14 at 7:00 AM at the Presidential Banquet Center, 4548 Presidential Way, Kettering, OH 45429. Members are encouraged to attend to see Mike and Chris receive their awards. If you are interested in attending contact President Alan. Tickets are needed, so please let Alan know if you wish to attend. (There will not be a regular Tuesday that week, in lieu of this Thursday event). |

Interesting Links: Some links of interest to the Northridge area are posted in the panel at the right (see the red buttons under "Other Northridge Links"). They are for The Northidge Alumni Bear Facts website, the Northridge Schools website, and the Northridge Schools facebook page. The Northridge Alumni organization lists our club information in their "Support Groups" section and they also have a "Northridge Optimist Club" page in their menu, featuring our Membership Invitation Brochure. They have also featured our Pass/Shoot/Dribble, Essay Contest and Scholarship Scramble items under the "Events Calendar" in their menu, and posted Pass/Shoot/Dribble and Essay Contest information on the Northridge Schools facebook page. Many thanks to the Northridge Alumni organization for their support and for helping to promote our club events. We plan to provide information on their events on our Bulletin Board and in our e-mail bulletin. One good way to show support is to patronize the alumni businesses that are listed on their website: http://www.northridgealumni.org/id11.html. They also offer an interesting history of the Northridge Community called "From Ebenezer to Northridge" by Richard D. Allen on this link: http://www.northridgealumni.org/id68.html. | |
